Get found by the locals
Local SEO helps you get discovered by the people who are nearby, actively searching, and ready to buy. Here’s how to optimise for local SEO…
Step 1: Do local keyword research
Understand what people might search for your type of products or services. Create a list of up to 10 keyword searches - ‘Hairdresser Mudgee’ or ‘Emergency Plumber Whitianga’.
Step 2: Add your local keywords to your website content
Sprinkle them throughout your website, making sure it is a natural fit (Google isn’t a fan of keyword spam, and neither are humans). Include them in your meta titles and descriptions, image names, as well as your body copy. A ‘Where we work’ section could be a good starting point.
Step 3: Optimise your Google Business Profile
Add your local keywords to your business description and make sure your profile is complete.
Step 4: Get reviews
Google reviews help to improve your search ranking so have a process to collect them. This could include a QR code at checkout or an email follow-up. Make sure you ask for photos too! Then embed those reviews on your website.
Step 5: Embed a Google map
Embedding a map from Google Business reinforces your local presence and improves your chances of appearing in local search results.
Step 6: Get listed in local directories
Your business should be in as many relevant local directories as possible.
Step 7: Post regularly to your Google Business profile
Treat Google Business like another social media platform. Post updates, promos, and tips. Posting weekly or even fortnightly keeps your listing fresh - and Google loves that.
