Best things to do in Whitianga
A local’s guide to Whitianga and surrounds
We first came to Whitianga for family summer holidays and, like many, fell in love with the Coromandel. We eventually made the move permanently in 2018. Since then, Whitianga has become more than a holiday spot - it’s home.
Now, as a local brand and website designer, I get to help small businesses grow while soaking up all the beauty this town has to offer. If you’re planning a trip (or looking for reasons to stay longer), here are the best things to do in Whitianga with a bit of local insight you won’t find in the guidebooks.
Soak in a mineral pool
Tucked into subtropical gardens in the heart of Whitanga, The Lost Spring is a must-do, especially in the cooler months. Soak in the thermal mineral pools and have a cocktail or two delivered to you in the water. If you’re travelling with children, there’s a minimum age of 14 here.
Get out on the water
Whitianga’s harbour opens right into Mercury Bay, making it the perfect place to launch into an adventure. There are several charters in the area (launching from the wharf) to get you out on the water. For something special, climb aboard the Windborne, a beautiful tall ship, for a classic sailing experience.
Walk to Cathedral Cove
Cathedral Cove is one of the most Instagrammable spots. Carved by nature and surrounded by turquoise water, it’s another must-see. There’s a park at Lees Road and follow the track from there.
Swim at Cooks Beach
Cooks Beach is a local favourite for safe swimming. The northern end often has a little lake, perfect for young kids to splash around in. The Purangi River at the southern end is a great spot for a picnic and kids love jumping off the tree into the water across from the reserve at high tide.
Dig your own spa
A short drive south, Hot Water Beach offers a fun geothermal experience, dig into the sand near low tide and hot spring water bubbles up to create your own natural tub. Don’t forget a spade and be care, the water can get really hot in some spots!
Explore the shops in Whitianga
The town centre has lots of local treasures! Clothing stores, homewares, art galleries and surf shops.
Fish & chips on the beach
Hot fish and chips definitely tastes better when you eat them at the beach! There are a number of takeaways offering fish & chips along Albert Street in Whitianga.
Take the ferry to the ‘dark side’
Locals cheekily refer to the area across the estuary as "the dark side" — a nickname that likely came from the winter months, when rows of holiday homes sat empty and in shadow. The passenger ferry is a quick and fun way to reach Ferry Landing, Flaxmill Bay, and beyond. Plus, the 5-minute ride saves the longer drive around.
Let the kids burn energy at the Skate Park
Whitianga’s skate park (on Albert Street) has recently had a huge upgrade and it’s a great spot if your kids are into scooters or skateboards.
Catch a movie
If the weather’s not so great, Mercury Twin Cinemas has a cozy vibe and is a great indoor option.
Whether it’s your first visit or your fiftieth, Whitianga has a way of drawing you in - just like it did for our family.
